A winter hike in Hoyt ArboretumPersonal History
My enjoyment of gardens began amongst my grandmother's peonies, roses and lilacs where I played as a child.  I also developed an appreciation for fine craftsmanship and natural materials through my my father's example as a skilled stone mason and contractor.  He was sought after by the leading architects in Portland during his career, and I seek to continue that tradition of excellence.

Professional Training
To further my technical knowledge of plants and the mechanics of garden building, I received a Certificate of Landscape Design from Portland Community College.  I also spent a year working as a designer for a landscape contractor to get some practical experience in the field before starting my own design business.  I had the privilege of attending a workshop offered by the renowned English garden designer,
John Brookes.  I continually further my knowledge of garden design and horticulture by reading and attending seminars.  I also belong to two professional organizations, the Association of Northwest Landscape Designers, and the Association of Professional Landscape Designers.

I am certified through the Association of Professional Landscape Designers, a national organization.  The certification process involved submitting examples of my work to a review board, who evaluated it based on established standards of excellence for landscape design.  I am currently serving on the board of APLD Oregon Chapter.  As a member, I follow the following APLD standards of practice:

  • Advance landscape design by continuing professional education and exchanging knowledge with colleagues

  • Be truthful in oral or written statements concerning the services they are qualified to offer

  • Protect the environment and discourage damage to our natural resources

  • Refrain from expressing an uninformed opinion on any issues relating to the profession

  • Be loyal to clients or to the employing organization and faithfully perform assigned tasks

  • Avoid making unfounded statements or criticizing colleagues for personal gain

  • Participate in public service activities to educate the public about good landscape design and sound horticultural practices

  • Conduct all matters relating to landscape design activities, business operation, and civic responsibilities in a manner that will further the status of landscape design as a respected profession

I am fortunate that my vocation as a landscape designer is also my avocation.  I enjoy trying out new plants in my own garden so I know how well they perform before I use them in my clients gardens.  I have been an avid gardener for over 20 years.

I would be delighted to help you achieve a garden you will love!
